The E24 6 series is one of BMW's finest that is quickly becoming more and more sought after as a useable and entertaining classic and being a successor to the much-loved E9 CS coupe. The new 6 series arrived in the UK in 1976 and was BMW's first push into the upper ranks of motoring. BMW's in-house designer Paul Bracq created the distinctive styling that has gained so many fans over the year. This example being the reverse angle front grille area, commonly known as the "shark" nose.
Beneath the tasteful styling housed a number of elements from the E12 5 series, although slightly updated for this particular model. A modern fuel injection system made it's way into the two larger capacity six-cylinder engines available at the time. The 6 series was the first of model of it's kind to feature BMW's check control system, with banks of warning lights for various on-board systems. At it's launch in 1976, the top of the range 6 series boasted the M30 straight-six paired with a Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system which resulted in a healthy 200hp and 210lb ft of torque. Good for a 0-60mph time of 8.1 seconds.
Relative to it's weight, the 6 series was relatively heavy for what was practically a touring car, but BMW focused most of their efforts on preparing the E30 M3 for it's competition career. In total, the 635CSi won three European Touring Car championships, two DTM titles and earned the top step of the podium at both Spa and Nurburgring 24 hour races.
